How to save costs on energy
Off at the socket, more in your pocket! If you unplug the appliances that you aren’t using regularly, it can save you some money as leaving your phone charger plugged in can continue to use electricity when it is not in use. Similarly, if you are leaving computers or TVs on standby this is also wasting energy – it’s better to just turn them off.
Go green with your light bulbs. If you can, try and use halogen bulbs, compact fluorescent lamps and light-emitting diode bulbs as these last longer and are energy efficient.

Consistency is key It’s more energy efficient to leave your heating on for longer at a lower temperature than it is to have it on sporadically at a higher temperature for a shorter period of time.
Re-use the water for your hot water bottle If you’re needing to re-heat your hot water bottle, instead of using fresh water, why not reuse what is already in your bottle?

Turn down the heat The majority of energy used to wash your clothes comes from the cost of heating up the water. If you wash your clothes between 30-40 degrees, you’ll be saving a lot of money.
Hang it up Instead of using your tumble dry to dry your clothes, hang them outside or on a clothes horse.

How to be efficient in the kitchen
Have a baking day! If you use the oven every day, why not bake a few meals at once and get the most out of having your oven on?
Avoid pre-rinsing Instead of pre-rinsing your used dinner plates, why not scrape the leftovers into the bin?
Avoid empty spaces in the fridge Keeping your fridge and freezer full is actually more energy-efficient than having empty appliances. Keeping them full means that they don’t have to work as hard to keep everything chilled.
Use small pans for small meals It might seem simple but if you are cooking for one, be sure to use a small pan as well as the smaller ring on your hob. If you use a larger pan, you’re using more water to fill it and more energy to heat it up. Similarly, if you’re cooking for a few people, use a larger pan on a bigger ring to avoid any unnecessary strain on the smaller rings!
Reheat with your microwave oven is the most energy-efficient appliance for reheating as well as cooking in general. This is followed by the hob and then the oven. So anything you can put into the microwave, try to use it.
Look at what can be improved on your whole home
Is it time for some insulation? There are government grants available for free loft and cavity wall insulation. This can save you between 15-25% on your energy bills. If you do not own your property, why not have a chat with your landlord to see what they can install?
Solar panels The government has a Feed-in-Tariff scheme which pays solar panel installers for energy that is generated and some of them might install them for free if you ask. Having solar panels installed can save up to a third of your energy bill. Again, if you do not own the property you are in, check with your landlord.
Check the airflow Condensation and bad airflow in a property can cause mould and damp which naturally brings down the temperature of your home. If you have damp or mould in your property, contact your landlord immediately to get this rectified.
Seal your windows Double check your windows to see if any draughts are coming through and if they are, consider adding weatherstripping around the frames.
